1. Roast your own coffee beans

Roasting coffee beans is all the rage and it can be a great idea when you aren’t able to go out and buy your usual beans. You can use the oven or a popcorn popper to roast the absolute perfect beans.

Preheat your oven to 450ºF, lay some beans out on a pan (one layer is perfect), roast for 15-20 minutes and enjoy!

2. Use a french press

Brewing your coffee in a french press makes one of the best cups of coffee. This is because when you use a french press, you get a lot more of the coffee’s oils in the cup instead of stuck in the filter of the machine. Need other ideas on how to make coffee? Check out our blog about the different ways you can make coffee at home!

With more of the coffee’s oil in the cup, the coffee ends up tasting a lot better. Essentially, you’re adding stronger and additional flavor to your cup of coffee.

You can even use your french press to make espresso, which then allows you to make lattes, (flavored lattes if you have any syrups), cappuccinos, and more. In order to make espresso with your french press, you just grind your coffee beans very fine and merely submerge the grounds with hot water.

Once you’ve made your espresso, you can heat some milk on your stove or in your microwave, pour it into the french press, and then move the plunger repeatedly up and down to create something foam-like. To flavor your latte, add syrups if you have any.

4. Reuse coffee grounds

Don’t throw your grounds out after brewing a pot of coffee. Keep them and use them as a paste for your regular household needs. Use them to cover a bad smell, clean spots, and even to repel outdoor irritants.

If you’re going to be stuck indoors, you might as well use what you have. Your already used grounds are perfect for a number of household needs. Be on the lookout for our upcoming blog about how to reuse coffee grounds and get the most out of them!

5. Make cold brew

Cold brew is a top coffee house drink and many people that are sheltering in their homes are in mourning over the loss of their favorite coffee drink. What they don’t know is that it is easy to make their own.

Use grounds, water, a fine filter, and milk if you choose, to get your cold brew going before bed. In the morning, finish up the cold brew and gulp that coffee just like you would if you picked it up at your local cafe. Cold brews can take between 12-24 hours for steeping the coffee. Once it’s finished you can chill the coffee in the fridge and it will be good for up to 2 weeks!

6. Do your own latte art

So many people love lattes because they love their latte art. Picking up your drink from the counter to find it adorned with a perfect leaf made of foam is a simple and delightful experience. It can be difficult to miss out on these simple joys while stuck at home.

The good thing is, you can actually create your own latte art and peacefully enjoy sipping your great-looking latte every day from the comfort of your home. Realize that learning to make latte art will require quite a bit of patience and practice, but you have lots of time right now to do it.

There are tons of videos and tutorials on line that will help you get started so that you can truly become a home-barista extraordinaire.

7. Store (Hawaiian Paradise) coffee beans the right way

Coffee beans need to be stored properly in order to stay fresh, however many people don’t know how to do it. Divvy your coffee up into weekly portions. Keep your current weekly portion on the counter in an air-tight container, and your other portions in the freezer. When you start each new week, pull out the next bit.

8. Practice making drip coffee

Lastly, while many people love it, making drip coffee isn’t usually the best way to make coffee. For some people, it’s all that they’re able to do right now. Learning to do it the best and most effective way is a necessity.

The problem with most drip coffee makers is that they don’t get hot enough quickly enough, which means the coffee is not getting all the flavor that it should. One way to hack this issue is to run a pot of water first, giving the coffee maker a chance to heat up.

Once the water brews into the carafe, pour it back into the coffee maker and use it as your coffee water. This method ensures that your coffee maker is hotter and will be able to release more of the coffee flavors as it brews.
